Career Change Resume & Cover Letter

Graduating from university and getting your first full-time job can be overwhelming.

We live in a world where everything is changing with the speed of light, and career changes happen more often than ever.

Some industries have a lot in common and you will not need additional skills to transition between them. However, if you have always worked in sales and decided to move to the tech sector, even after completing all necessary qualifications, it can l be hard to explain your motivation to a potential employer.

Below are some tips that you can use for tailoring your resume to a new job even if you don’t have direct experience for the job.

A hybrid format resume would be the best in case of a career change. It’s a mix of the chronological resume and the functional resume formats and places equal emphasis both on your skills and work experience. You need to talk about your transferable skills and describe the situations where they were used. Also, do not forget to briefly explain your reasons for a change in the Summary section.

Your cover letter will also require some thoughtful consideration. In this case, it almost becomes an essay, where you explain to an employer your career path and choices. It is necessary to mention your transferrable skills again and highlight achievements from your previous experience that are relevant to a new role.

After this, dwell on your reasons for exploring a career change. This will give recruiters further insight into why you are interested in the role, despite your apparent lack of experience. Did the pandemic prompt the career change? Did a certain aspect of your previous job make you want to explore that area further? Were you inspired by a hobby or passion or just looking for a better work-life balance?

Make sure you draw attention to new skills that you acquired in preparation for your career change. Maybe you have completed online courses or attended conferences to gain new knowledge?

Besides all of these, do not forget that your determination is what leads you to success and even small steps in the right direction will eventually help you to achieve your goal.
