Graduate Resume without Work Experience

Graduating from university and getting your first full-time job can be overwhelming.

Today most employers value soft skills over hard skills when hiring for entry-level jobs, because soft skills are
harder to teach. When you’re entering the job market for the first time and creating a resume with no relevant
work experience, it is essential to focus on your skill set developed from different experiences and share your
greatest strengths.

Here are some examples that you may want to include in your first resume:

  • Part-time jobs such as babysitting, dog walking or mowing lawns
  • Extracurricular activities such as clubs and sports
  • University projects
  • Internships and apprenticeships
  • Volunteer work

  • Volunteer work

When listing these roles, you need to explain how they helped you to develop a certain skill, required for the
job. For example, if you’re applying for a job as an administrative assistant, you don’t need to discuss how
your mowing lawns helped improve your gardening skills, but you could share how this helped you cultivate
customer service and time management skills. You can even talk about travelling and mention that you learnt to
adapt quickly to changing circumstances in a new environment. It is also crucial to highlight that you’re
capable of building new skills and learning new processes.

Here are a few soft skills that you might include:

  • Communication Skills
  • Time management
  • Organisational skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Customer service

Do not forget to mention your computer skills, such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Email management.

Having no experience does not make you a less attractive candidate if you present your skills in a compelling way.
